What happens at the Burnaby casino door

Before the first table or machine, there is a door, and in Burnaby the door has rules. This page covers the two that matter at Grand Villa Casino: the legal age of 19 and the photo ID scan that every person goes through. It also lists which cards security accepts.

Age 19, and ID for everyone

The legal age for gambling in British Columbia is 19, and that includes casinos. Since June 26, 2023, every person entering a B.C. casino must show government-issued photo ID. Security scans it at the door.

Each scan checks the card against a list of people restricted from entering. That list includes those enrolled in Game Break, BCLC's voluntary self-exclusion program. For people who are let in, the system does not save personal information.

B.C. was the first jurisdiction in North America to require ID at the casino door. Somebody had to go first.

Photo ID accepted at the door

  • B.C. or North American driver's licence
  • B.C. Identity Card (BCID) or B.C. Services Card
  • Canadian or international passport
  • Canadian citizenship card or Canadian permanent resident card
  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status card
  • Canadian identity card issued by Global Affairs Canada
  • Membership cards issued by First Nations, Métis or Inuit bands
  • Government-issued foreign ID

No card, no entry

No card means no entry, whatever a person's age looks like. Grey hair is not on the accepted list. Neither is a photo of an ID saved on a phone, so bring the physical card itself.

Parking at Grand Villa is complimentary, with a parkade leading to the front door and several outdoor lots. A wallet forgotten in the car is at least a short walk away.

Questions

Is personal information stored when a visitor enters?

Not for people who are let in. Security scans the card and checks it against the restricted list, but for those admitted the system does not save personal information.

Does someone who clearly looks older than 19 still need ID?

Yes, every person entering a B.C. casino must show government-issued photo ID. The rule does not depend on how old someone looks.

Can a visitor from outside Canada get in?

Yes, provided they are 19 or older. Government-issued foreign ID is on the accepted list, and so are international passports.
